The course aims to provide the students with required knowledge and skill to design structures using structural steel as one alternative to reinforced concrete. In the course, the students will be introduced to the principles and techniques of analyzing and designing different types of structural components using steel.



Courses in structural analysis (concept of structures I & II) are essential prerequisites.


Course outline:

[1] Introduction to design in steel:

Design requirements, methods of design, material properties, loading & loading combinations.

[2] Design of trusses:

Tension members, compression members and connections.

[3] Design of beams:

Restrained beams and unrestrained beams

[4] Design of columns:

Design of columns and beam columns

[5] Design of connections and column bases.

Bolted connections, welded connections and base plates.
