68401 Structural Design of Buildings I

Course Objectives

  • Learn modeling, analysis and design of reinforced concrete elements and structures.
  • Understand the concept and advantages of reinforced concrete.
  • Learn about the behavior and failure modes of reinforced concrete elements (beams, columns and slabs).

 

 

Course Contents

  • Introduction to concrete materials and reinforced concrete structural systems.
  • Design philosophy, modeling and load calculations for reinforced concrete structures.
  • Flexural design of beams and one-way slabs.
  • Shear design of beams.
  • Design of short columns.
  • Bond and development of reinforcing bars

 

 

Required Background

  • Fundamentals of mechanics of materials
  • Fundamentals of structural analysis

 

Grading

The course includes two midterm exams, one final exam, homework problems and a project. The final score will be decided as follows:

  • Homework and project                       = 20 %
  • Exam 1                                               = 15%
  • Exam 2                                               = 15%
  • Final Exam                                          = 50%
