Course Description

This course includes a study and analysis of the leadership theories, styles, and tools to develop students leadership abilities and skills needed to exercise leadership in organizations. The course coversresearch perspectives and theories on leadership, leadership process, leadership and situational differences,  motivation and empowerment, work teams, organizational vision, culture and values.

Course Goals and Learning Outcomes

 
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the nature of leadership and how good leadership moves the organization into the future.  
  2. Understand, analyze, and apply the research perspectives and theories on leadership. Specifically, the traits, behaviors, relationships, and the contingency approaches to leadership.
  3. Deal with complex factual situations through identifying and discussing the different roles that leaders can play in different organizational contexts surrounded by different ever changing environments. 
  4. Understand the personal side of leadership to evaluate and develop the quality of their proposed leadership activities against appropriate criteria used in leadership studies, including organizational constraints.
  5. Develop a range of leadership skills and abilities to motivate and empower the followers and communicate with them to ensure success.
  6. Form and lead teams in organizations.
  7. Understand and critically think about the organizational vision, strategic direction, culture and values, and how to lead the change.

Methods of Teaching and Learning

These will consist of textbook readings, case studies, active discussions, quick and short presentations, research, practice quizzes, midterm and final examinations.

Course Requirements

  • Regular attendance is highly required.
  • Classroom participation and presentation is highly recommended.
  • Personal improvements, as long as we proceed, is needed.
  • Assignment 1: analysis and contribution on Leadership cotemporary issues:
    In this assignment, students present an essayon Leadership. Each student will be given approx. 5 minutes  to present his intensive review, understanding, and conclusion of an additional subject on Leadership. Materials ( or Readings) to be given by the instructor.
  • Assignment 2: Case Study and Solution:
    This assignment helps students to develop their abilities in dealing with different real situations. Students are expected to study the assigned cases methodologically and to submit a written report on these cases as well.
  • Assignment 3: Analytical Research Paper:
    This assignment helps students to integrate the contents taught in the course by developing an analytical research report on a leadership related topic (5-10 pages of A4), (e.g. Crisis mgt. and leadership; complexity and leadership)- Important note:Plagiarism of the sources (e.g. internet) will result in disqualification. Students are required to prove their deep understanding of leadership, as well as their research abilities.
