I gave this workshop at Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching two times on Nov. 29, 2012 and on March 7, 2013 Here is the workshop outline
Introduction
Community Based Learning (CBL) is a learning approach in which academic institutions and communities (organizations) work together in order to meet their common needs. While the communities provide the worksite as an extension of the classroom, students help communities (organizations) solve their problems through projects proposed based on both sides’ interests.
Unlike most people think, CBL does not completely alternate the traditional teaching approach in which all teaching activities take place inside the classroom. In fact, the main principle underlying CBL as a learning approach is that through exposure to both community and classroom environments, students can most effectively and efficiently acquire knowledge, build skills, and develop useful attitudes.
Objectives and Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
The workshop aims to introduce the Community Based Learning to participants who will acquire the necessary knowledge and practical comprehension of CBL through interactive sessions. Participants at the end of the workshop will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of CBL and its effect on the learning process;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the CBL framework and its main steps; and
3. Demonstrate an ability to design and build a CBL class.

Description |
Part 1 Introduction (10:00-10:50) |
- What is CBL? - Interaction among CBL Actors - Elements of High Quality CBL - Limitations and Challenges |
These topics will be introduced by the presenter and discussed by all participants. All participants will also hear from instructors who are currently teaching or have taught a CBL class. |
10:50-11:00 |

Part 2 A CBL Framework (11:00-11:50) |
Main Steps Step 1) Exploration Step 2) Initiation Step 3) Planning Step 4) Implementation Step 5) Evaluation |
The CBL framework will be demonstrated by introducing a case study. The case is a GIS as CBL class being taught this semester by the presenter in the Civil Engineering Department. Other instructors who are teaching a CBL class will be given the time to talk about their experience and about their comments on the suggested framework. |
11:50-12:00 |
Coffee Break |
