The first Bioethics workshop entitled “Public Health and Human Rights in Palestine” was held on the 10th of June at An-Najah National Hospital.

This workshop aimed to increase local knowledge regarding the issue of bioethics, increase dialogue between key stakeholders and align/ formulate strategy based on the local information gathered.

Instructors from An-Najah university from different faculties such as faculty of Medicine and human sciences, and Faculty of law as well as doctors and nurses from An-Najah hospital and lawyers were invited to attend and contribute in this workshop.

The program of the Bioethics workshop featured few talks on the current situation and challenges of bioethics in Palestine. The workshop focused on three aspects: medical, legal and sociocultural. Several talks/discussion oriented were presented. The first talk which was presented by Dr.Kherieh Rassas the coordinator of the project, introduced the PHHR center and explaind its importance in Palestine. The second talk was divided into three parts; each part demonstrated one aspect of bioethics. Dr. Jawad Fatayer talked about the sociocultural aspect, Mrs. Safa Balaawe, talked about the legal aspect and Dr. Hasan Fityan talked about the clinical care component. Additionally, Dr. Basma Demeire discussed the core ethics of scientific research. A talk by the project directors presented the current situation of bioethics in Palestine based on a qualitative research followed by a discussion on how to conjugate the three components of the bioethics in order to create a shared intellectual environment and how to promote bioethics it in everyday practice.
