General Description

In this course, the student is introduced to architectural projects that deal mainly with public services and cultural activities. The scale of the projects are chosen to be of medium size of one or two buildings. This will give the student the chance to concentrate on the basic principles of the design process and the main functional aspects of the architectural forms.

Objectives:

The main objectives of this course is the following:

1- To give the student the ability to develop a philosophical concept into a design project taking into consideration the different components involved in evolution of the deign process. Aspects of forms, spatial configuration and functional relationship of the main elements of the projects has to be considered.

2- To give the student the tools that enables him to understand and manage the functional aspects of the design projects. Aspects related to vertical and horizontal circulation, technical problems that deal with structure. Economic and flexibility measures should be introduced.

3- To introduce the student on issues related to the context, such as physical surrounding, topography, and climate. This will affect the quality of spaces and make it more compatible.

Method of teaching:

The method of teaching applied in this course is mainly design studio where student has to take design projects related to the main objectives of the course. Projects that have the duration of 4 to 6 weeks are recommended . This gives the student enough time to develop a design projects with all the factors involved in this process. Also it is recommend to give the student in this course sketch problems of duration of one week. This will enable him to tackle specific issues needed in this course and help him in the main projects.

Program:

First semester:

Project 1: Studio for a philosopher. 3 Weeks

Project 2: Mall / park / Gas station 5 weeks

Project 3: International Hostel within an Urban Context 6 weeks

Two sketch problems. 2 weeks

Total I6 Weeks

Second Semester:

Project 1: Clinic / Bank Branch 3 weeks

Project 2: Digital Media Centre / Music Building 6 weeks

Project 3: Museum/Civic Building (in an urban context). 5 weeks

Two sketch problems. 2 weeks

Total 16 Weeks

Evaluation:

The main method of evaluation applied in this course depends on the time each project has been assigned for. This gives the student the chance to improve his grades if he did not accomplish a satisfactory level in the first projects
