The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from a socio-cultural semiotic perspective, novice
students’ pre-symbolic and symbolic types of generalization of patterns. The investigation is carried
out in terms of the semiotic (linguistic and non linguistic) means of objectification that Grade 8
students display in the attainment of the goals of generalizing mathematical tasks.
