Description:

English Communication Skills offers students communication activities related to different walks of life and responds to a set of objectives and intended learning outcomes (ILOs). The book adopts a task-based approach that invites students to work together in a social constructivist manner; each student is expected to share his/her learning experience with his/her classmates under the supervision and moderation of an EFL instructor.

The level of units ranges from advanced intermediate to advanced, and all parts of the book  (except for the introductory part) can be undertaken in whatever order the teacher chooses that suits his/her syllabus and the learning objectives of his/her course. For example, one can use the technical writing part to give students some training in that domain even if they do not study the other parts of the book.

The exercises are situated at the end of each learning activity so that students learn from the immediacy of the presentation made on the addressed topics. The exercises are tailored to reinforce the learning experience and to give students a chance for self-assessment and for learning by individual and collaborative research. At the end of each unit, students are expected to hand in a portfolio that includes all their answers to the exercises of the unit. The teacher is expected to give constant formative assessment of his/her students as the course proceeds.

English Communication Skills is available as a hard and electronic copy to enable students to use its parts in different situations and learning circumstances, especially the distance education setting. Teachers may choose different parts and exercises to upload on the e-learning platforms such as Moodle, Blackboard and Sakai.

In short English Communication Skills is a book that offers different learning practices to help students of English as a foreign language to improve their English language communication skills as they use the four English language skills in different situations and for different purposes.
