Abstract:

This study aimed at recognizing the level of self – concept and the levels of the three dimensions of burnout emotional exhaustion , depersonalization , and personal accomplishment from the viewpoint of secondary phase male and female teachers at government schools in Jenin and Nablus districts . The research also aimed at recognizing the effect of a number of demographic variables of (sex, age, experience, academic qualification, level of income, place or residence, and marital status) on the self – concept of this category of teachers. The study population consisted of all the secondary – phase male and female teachers at the government schools in Jenin and Nablus districts whose number is (1246) teachers distributed at 112 schools. The study random sample consisted of (312) male and female teachers representing (25%) of the total number of teachers , while number of persons who returned questionnaire (280) persons. The researcher applied two instruments: the first is (Tennessee Self – concept Inventory) to measure self – concept. The second is (Maslash Burnout Inventory) to measure burnout. To verify the instrument’s validity , the researcher demonstrated it at (10) specialized arbitrators at An-Najah National University. To verify the consistency of the two scales , the researcher applied the alpha Cronbach equation where the consistency coefficient at Tennessee’s Self Concept Inventory was (0.88) and at Maslash’s Burnout Inventory (0.86). The researcher considered these consistency coefficients suitable for the study purposes. The researcher put a number of questions and hypotheses. To answer the study questions , the researcher used means , percentages , and standard deviations. To test the hypotheses, the researcher used the Pearson Correlation Equation ,(t) tests of two independent samples, the analysis of variance ANOVA through using the statistic program of social sciences (SPSS). After analyzing the results, the study reached the following findings: 1.The self – concept level scored medium grade at the self dimension (physical, personal, family, ethical, and total degree) while it scored low degree at the social self dimension. 2.The level of burnout scored high degree at the emotional exhaustion and low degree at the personal accomplishment , while it was moderate at the dimension of depersonalization. 3.There is a positive relationship of significant correlation between self – concept and the burnout of its three dimensions. 4.There were no significant differences of self – concept level between males and females at the (physical and personal) self dimensions, while there were significant differences at the (ethical, social, family, and total degree) self dimensions, where the differences were in favor of females. This means that females have higher self – concept the males at these dimensions at the total degree. 5.There were no significant differences at the self – concept level attributed to the (age, experience, academic qualification, level of income, and place of residence) variable. 6.As for the marital status variable , there were no significant differences at the self – concept level between married and unmarried at the (personal, family, social, and physical) self dimensions, while the differences were significant at the ethical self dimensions and at the total degree where the differences were in favor of the married. This means that the self – concept for unmarried teachers was higher than it was for married teachers. The researcher discussed these findings and put forward a number of recommendations and suggestions to draw attention of the Ministry of Education to take specific measures and procedures to raise the teacher’s self – concept and to prepare suitable atmospheres to achieve this objective. In addition, good humane relations should be built inside the study population and between it and the outside community, to improve job circumstances of teachers, and to carry out more similar studies or related to this study on a greater sector of teachers including basic and preparatory phases teachers.
